Taking Cover
                           by: Penguin and Daddy

Why bother with a aquarium or bin cage when they sell cages? Well here's why, hamster cages are expensive, but aquariums are half the price. Also, you might just have a extra plastic storage bin. Aquariums and bin cages make it easier to take pictures of your hamster, without worrying your furry friend will escape. Plus, you can change it's food, take out toys or add new ones without hearing the clang! of the metal bars and scaring your lil' hammie. So in this project we will learn how to make a cover for your hamster's aquarium cage. Penguin has added "Tips for a healthy hamster" at the bottom so make sure to read it!

Step 1: Take a wooden blank and measure the length and width of the aquarium top. Mark the line.

Step 2: Saw the wood on the line you made. Repeat with the other blanks.
Step 3: Measure a piece of hardware cloth so it fits the aquarium top. Check also with the wooden blanks.
Step 4: Make sure it fits properly and hammer a nail into the boards. The blanks should hold the hardware cloth into place.

Step 5: Fit it on the aquarium.

Step 6: Saw a small part of the wood under the cover to make a place for the water bottle and you're all done!

Suggestions: We used pine wood for this cover, but we prefer to use plywood. If the hardware cloth is loose, you can use cable ties to secure the hardware cloth.

Tips for a healthy hamster: Do not use pine or cedar bedding, because pine and cedar can have harmful fumes, even humans can smell it three feet away! Imagine what it smells like to a hamster. Aspen is okay too. There is also "fluffy bedding" which looks tempting to buy, but it is made of artificial fibers that is dangerous if digest (since my hamster likes to stuff bedding in its' mouth), and can tangle your hamster's legs. Kaytee, CritterCare, and Carefresh are three reliable hamster bedding companies. For hamster cages, I would say not to buy those "hamster starter kit cages". We bought a hamster starter kit cage for my hamster, Honey, but the hamster wheel was stiff, it even took a human some energy to turn it! The water bottle dripped a lot! By the next morning, the whole second floor was flooded! Honey sitting on the wheel, looking at her precious food that was flooded. Of course, I had to clean it up. Hamsters aren't really that stinky, you just have to clean it's cage every week. Training your hamster might not be that easy, just give it some time. After a week, let it sniff your hand and when it feels not that scared, put a carrot or a treat on your hand and let it come to you. For super shy hamsters like Honey, start by petting it, to let it know that you are her friend, and also it feels good. It will start to trust you, and she might even look forward to playing with you! Sometimes, it might even start to sulk and fall asleep if you "forget" about her, like right now. So good luck taking care of your hamster!
P.S. That hamster is Honey!

  1. Honey
